Thai Smile Airways says if owners of "Child's Angels" don't buy tickets for the popular life-like dolls they will be treated as hand luggage.

Coffee, tea or chucky: A woman lovingly embraces her Child's Angel doll.

The dolls, made to the same proportions as infants, have become fashionable since several celebrities adopted them in the belief they bring good fortune.

The owners take the dolls through a ceremony to draw angels into them in a craze that has swept the country. Believers normally take care of them as their children and dress them .....

The new superstitious trend among Thai people involves carrying, talking to and caring for factory-manufactured dolls (called 'Look Thep' in Thai). They believe the dolls hold children's spirits which bring good luck, wealth, blessing and protection from harm. Owners of Child Angel dolls worship and treat them as human infants by cradling, feeding and dressing them up.
Dolls cost from 2,000 baht (US$55) to 20,000 baht ($556). The trend has even prompted Thai Smile Air to allow passengers to buy tickets for their Child Angels dolls, agreeing to serve them onboard drinks and food and several restaurants in Bangkok have announced they will serve children's meals to the dolls. Immigration police keeping an eye on new ‘Angel’ dolls

IMMIGRATION POLICE officers will be strict about people carrying “Child Angel” dolls due to fears they could be used to smuggle contraband such as drugs, the national police chief said yesterday.

Police General Chakthip Chaijinda said that criminals could hide illicit substances in such dolls when travelling.

"Criminals will have a new way to smuggle drugs," the police chief said.

"I have instructed all the immigration checkpoints to be strict - whether they are at airports or the borders. They must also strictly screen 'Look Thep' dolls passing their checkpoints," he added.

Chakthip also opposed allowing the dolls to be taken in to airline cabins because of the risk of smuggled contraband.

Life-like "Child Angel" dolls, known as "Tukkata Look Thep" in Thai, have been a fad since last year when a number of celebrities were seen with their adopted baby substitutes.

The factory-manufactured dolls blessed by monks are often being used as a kind of amulet to attract good fortune.

Thai Smile Airways recently allowed passengers to book a seat for their Child Angel dolls. The airline said it was serving its clients' needs according to an increase in demand. However, the dolls are only allowed to be booked for window seats that are away from emergency exits.

"I was startled upon reading the news this morning. How have we arrived at this point?" the police chief asked yesterday.

Meanwhile, Department of Mental Health director general Jedsada Chokdamrongsuk said yesterday that the popularity of Child Angels reflected a deep-seated superstition in Thai society.

He said the phenomenon was no different from past trends when people "raised" child ghosts known as Kumarn Thong. "Child Angels are a clever blend between superstition and the digital age," he said.

Jedsada rejected an observation that "parents" of the Child Angels might have mental problems.

"We all need a mental refuge that we lack. Some people have some worries and they need something that they can rely on," he said.

Dr Yongyuth Wongpiromsant, a senior official at the mental health department, yesterday credited a clever marketing strategy for the popularity of the dolls. He said celebrities and social media were used in order to boost their appeal.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) will curb airlines from selling "angel child" doll plane tickets as concerns have grown that they could be used to smuggle drugs.

Police on Tuesday seized a doll stuffed with 200 methamphetamine "speed" pills at Chiang Mai international airport.

Superstition has been given a very modern makeover in the 'child angel' doll craze taking the country by storm.

Rise and shine my girl, it’s time to wake up,” Prince whispers to her daughter, as they lay next to each other on the bed. After taking a shower, Prince cleans Nong Reaksap’s face, brushes her hair into ponytails and gives her a bottle of milk and a piece of bread to eat.

No cremation for “child angels”

www.thai-dk.dk/uploads/dukker33.jpg

A Nakhon Pathom-based temple abbot yesterday revealed that he had turned down requests by several owners of “child angels” for doll cremations, following reports of people starting to dump their “Look Thep” dolls at this Bangkok outskirts monastery, as they presumably felt embarrassed about carrying the “spirit” dolls around.

Wat Phai Lom abbot Phra Kru Palad Sitthiwat told reporters that a fruit vendor had asked the temple's undertaker to cremate her "child angel" doll and offered a Bt10,000 cash donation to cover the expenses. She told temple staff that since she obtained the doll many family members criticised her and even called her crazy, and as she could no longer put up with the pressure, wanted the doll to be cremated. The abbot said that he turned down the request and put the doll among many other ones with similar fates at the temple. The Bt10,000 money donation was also contributed to the temple's Vihara construction campaign instead.

The monk said that he understood the doll owner's feelings but the cremation was for a human funeral and they must follow the rules. The dolls were not a human body that needs a cremation rite by tradition and law, he explained adding that he also wanted to respect the people's beliefs and faiths regarding the "child angels." He said people could leave their "child angels" or "Kuman Thong" baby amulets at the temple at any time and could take them back whenever they wanted.

Så intet nyt her.
