Bombs went off at 26 automated teller machines (ATMs) in Thailand's four southernmost provinces on Wednesday morning, a teacher was slain, a school burned, and soldiers attacked, police said.

Yala police radio station reported that bombs were detonated at six ATM locations in Muang district, four in Yaha and one in Bannang Sata. There were no reports of injuries.

Among the debris officers found metal boxes containing wires, cell phones and nine-volt batteries.

Pol Col Pho Suaysuwan, chief of Muang Pattani police station, said bombs exploded at six ATM locations in Muang district and two in Khok Pho, causing injuries to three people.

Police also found two explosive devices at an ATM near a school and another outside a restaurant. The bombs did not explode and were safely dismantled.

A hand grenade was also thrown onto a fishing trawler in Pattani's Muang district. The boat was partially damaged but nobody was hurt.

In Pattani's Sai Buri district, about 1.30am, a 55-year-old school teacher was shot dead by insurgents.

Police said Waena Munor was shot in the head at a teacher's residence on the property. After the shooting, the gunmen set fire to three of the school buildings and stole a truck with a hydraulic hoist belonging to the local administrative organisation.

The gunmen drove the vehicle some distance and then burned it. Along the way, they also burned tyres and scattered nail spikes and tree branches on the road to deter any pursuit, police said.

A roadside explosion in Sai Buri injured a number of soldiers and their vehicle was damaged by the five-kilogramme remote-controlled bomb.

An abandoned building belonging to the Fisheries Department in Pattani's Yarang district was also set on fire.

In Narathiwat, bombs were detonated at four ATM locations in Muang district. There were no reports of casualties.

Reports said one ranger was killed and four others wounded, one seriously, when a pick-up truck they were travelling in was ambushed in Narathiwat's Cho Airong district on Wednesday morning.

The rangers' vehicle was passing by Ban Yaning in tambon Chuap, about 400m from an intersection, when militants hiding behind roadside trees detonated a bomb and opened fire at them.

A brief exchange of gunfire followed before the ambushers melted away.

In Songkhla, three bombs exploded - in Natawee, Saba Yoi and Sakom districts. There were no reports of injuries.

Songkhla police said one of the suspects behind the bombings in the province was Abdultolae Kaso, 41. He was suspected of a bomb attack on June 28, and 13 arrest warrants had been issued for him.
