PATHUM THANI - A man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly assaulted his two-month-old stepdaughter, leaving her in a coma.
The baby's 15-year-old mother on Saturday claimed that her 30-year-old husband, whose name was withheld, forced the child to drink liquor and put powder in the baby's mouth and nose, according to a report in Thai Rath newspaper.
The stepfather then slammed her daughter to the ground and poured water on the infant, according to the report.
She believed the man was angry because he was irritated by the baby's crying to be fed.
The mother said the baby was left in a coma by the assault, with bruising and severe internal injuries, including brain damage.
She reported the assault to police in the company of a social worker.
The child is being treated at Pathum Thani Hospital and was reported to be in a critical condition.
The suspect denied the attempted murder charge and said he would testify in court, said Pol Col Somyot Ramkul, superintendent of Lam Luk Ka police station.
The man is being detained for further proceedings.
