Fourteen years since lead contamination at Klity Creek first came under the media spotlight, the Karen residents of Lower Klity in Kanchanaburi are still dealing with an environmental disaster. In February the Appeal Court upheld a lower court ruling ordering Lead Concentrates Co to pay 36 million baht in compensation to villagers suffering from lead contamination – yet an appeal to clean up the creek was dismissed. Although the company’s ore-processing plant has closed, villagers claim it has left a legacy of blindness, birth defects and mental disability. Video by Chumporn Sangvilert.
