YALA : Eight people including two students were injured as a grenade thrown at a military pickup truck in Yala municipality missed its target and exploded on a busy road
Students Affan Waehayi, 15, and Takan Lamun, 17, who attend Thamma Witthaya Munnithi school in the province, were walking to school when they were hit by the grenade early yesterday.
Doctors at Yala Central Hospital, which treated the injured, said Affan sustained serious wounds while the rest suffered only minor injuries.
The new school term for most schools began yesterday, prompting tight security for teachers and students.
Police said two men wearing what looked like tertiary uniforms approached the truck on a motorcycle. One threw a grenade at the vehicle, but the grenade bounced off the windshield and landed on the road near Soi Sirorot 3 in the old market area. The grenade went off, injuring eight passers-by and leaving a hole in the road. Police were examining shrapnel from the blast scene.
Meanwhile, security officers have warned monks in the strife-torn southern border provinces not to go out on morning alms rounds following the killing of two monks from Wat Suan Kaew in Yala on Monday.
Speaking on state-run Channel 11 yesterday, Yala Special Task Force chief Pricha Chan-ocha said temple staff would prepare food for monks so they have no need to leave temples to collect alms.
The victims, the only two monks left at Wat Suan Kaew in Yaha district, were killed in a bomb blast as they were collecting alms in Banyo village.
Two soldiers who were escorting them were seriously injured.
Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha said investigators had identified the attackers. He did not elaborate.
