The White Temple

Wat Rong Khun, perhaps better known to foreigners as the White Temple, is a privately-owned art exhibit in the style of a Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. It is owned by Chalermchai Kositpipat, who designed, constructed, and opened it to visitors in 1997.

Admission fee: 100 TB
Open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To come from Chiang Rai, you can take bus 1246 (every half hour) or bus 1244 and 1241 at Bus Terminal Number 1.

The White Temple is designed and funded by the same man
The breathtaking architecture and design of the White Temple was created by the Thai national artist Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat. Born in Chiang Rai, the same city in which the temple is built, Kositpipat has dedicated his life to restoring and further developing the White Temple, which is known locally as Wat Rong Khun.

The White Temple has a three-tiered roof
Visitors may not notice it at first glance, but the White Temple has more than one roof. Inspired by the traditional design of Buddhist temples in Thailand, the building has a three-tiered roof. It is decorated with unusually intricate Naga serpents and makes for an incredible sight from afar.

The color white symbolizes the purity of the Buddha
Temples in Thailand are very often decorated or adorned in gold trim but the creator chose to use white instead. And rather than white be used as an accent color, the brilliant color (or lack thereof) envelopes the buildings from the roof to the footer, as well as the surrounding bridges, fences, and statues.

Nearly everything about the temple depicts a religious or symbolic message
In addition to the pure white color choice, much of the structural choices, mythical creatures, and positions of the White Temple’s guardians and deities depict a religious or symbolic meaning. The common theme of the temple is of escaping greed and desire and moving towards enlightenment through Buddha’s teachings.

The restroom building is considered the most ornate and beautiful of its kind in Thailand
Visitors can look forward to visiting bathrooms housed in an entirely gold building featuring ornate exterior decorations.

James Bond island featured in the 1974 James Bond movie" The man with the golden gun".
This island is also famous for the Khao Phing Kan, a large slab of multi-coloured limestone that was at one time a solid part of the island. A crack at the top of the limestone eventually sheared and the piece of limestone that remains leans at a 15 degree incline against the side of the adjacent island wall.

I went to Emerald Cave
(Tham Morakot) by private long boat with a small motor driving from Sivalai beach resort.
The cost was around 70USD. I took 10 minutes from the mouth of the cave to inside, although the Morakot's distance is around 80 meters. This was my first time passing through the cave.
