Ayutthaya is about an hour north of Bangkok and is one of the most popular destinations for Thais and tourists alike to visit. It was the former capital of Siam until it was destroyed by the Burmese when it fell to their army in 1767. Today it’s listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and has hundreds of ancient temples to visit.

The city is an island that is surrounded by 3 rivers. It once had 24 ferries with many floating markets and canals crisscrossing the city. All of that is long gone but you can still see the remains of this once flourishing city.

There are many ways to explore the area from bicycle to tuktuk to scooter or private car. One of the best ways is to get out in the river and see it the way it used to be explored by boat. A trip around the island will cost about 500-800 Baht depending on what you want to see. It takes about an hour without any stops at the temples around the city. It’s a great way to see the city and offers a different vantage point than from the roads.

Enjoy the video!

One of the most authentic markets I have ever visited in Thailand. I ate beautifully cooked food at super cheap prices. Wearing Thai traditional costumes, saying hi to the friendly food vendors, and seeing the breathtaking view of Wat Rachaburi temple really made my night!
I will remember this beautiful night forever and hope that I have helped you fall even deeper in love with Thailand
