Loy Krathong (or Loi Krathong) Festival Thailand. 2015. ลอยกระทง Loy Krathong is one of many annual Thailand festivals and is one of the most important ones and also one of the most beautiful. During Loy Krathong people gather at lakes, rivers, canals and seas to release beautiful lotus shaped boats, decorated with candles, incense and flowers into the water. This video was filmed in Krabi Town in Krabi Thailand.

Loy Krathong is held in Bangkok, Phuket and all other parts of Thailand. The exact date of the festival is determined by the Thai lunar calendar, so the date is different each year. Loy Krathong falls on the night of the full moon on the twelfth lunar month (usually in November), at the end of the rainy season when the full-moon lights up the sky. The sight of thousands of Krathongs floating away with their flickering candle light is truly magical.

“Loy” means “float”, and a “krathong” is a special Thai floating sculpture traditionally made from a slice of a banana tree trunk, which is then decorated with folded banana leaves and flowers. You will find hundreds of krathongs for sale around the main Loy Krathong festivity areas. Often school children will make their own krathongs in school as a learning activity or with their family. There is also a Loy Krathong song.

If you’re in Thailand during Loy Krathong, once the sun sets and the moon starts to rise head to any waterway where you will see local Thai people gathering to celebrate this amazing Thai festival and float their krathongs. When you have your krathong place some coins into it and then some hair or fingernail. The hair or nail clippings are put into the krathong in the belief that the sins of the past year will be washed away and the coins so as to make merit. Next light the incense sticks and then the candle (these will already be in any krathong that you buy, be sure to remember a lighter or matches). The entire family should hold the krathong together after it is lit and then everyone makes a wish, and then gently places the krathong into the water with a little push. The krathongs carry away your troubles and bring good luck, provided they float away. You may not be so lucky should it sink or tip over

Loy Krathong is definitely a fascinating and beautiful Thai festival, so check it out if you’re in Amazing Thailand when it’s on. If you want to explore one of the most interesting cultures and countries in the world be sure to visit Thailand!

Here's a quick edit I did for some footage I shot last night at the Loi Krathong festival. The video was recorded using an SJ4000 camera.
