An Arab-looking man went berserk throwing two bombs at a taxi and a police and his own legs were cut off by a blast Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Pol Lt Col Witthaya Poonsin, deputy commander of Klong Tan traffic police, said the foreigner, who has yet to be identified, threw the first bomb at a taxi on Soi Pridi Panomyong. The taxi was damaged in the explosion.

Witthaya said the man later walked to the main Sukhumvit 71 Road and when he spotted a police officer, the man tried to lob another bomb at the officer.

The bomb slipped out of his hand and exploded. The blast cut both of his legs and he was rushed to the Chulalongkorn Hospital.

Klong Tan police chief Col Sitthiparp Baiprasert said police are checking whether there are still explosives left.

Sitthiparp said the man was likely an Arab who rented a house on Soi Pridi Phanomyong 36.

Sitthiparp said there was also an explosion at the house at 2 pm.

He said three foreigners were living at the house but two had fled.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Wallop Suwankhadee said the first explosion was only 500 metres away from Kasem Witthaya School.

Sanchai Boonsoonnern, the driver of the damaged taxi, told the Rawangpai TV programme, that the foreigner suddenly threw a bomb at his vehicle.

The bomb fell on the bonnet of his car and rolled to under it and exploded.

The taxi driver was standing outside the vehicle so he shouted for help and tried to run after the attacker who ran towards the Sukhumvit 71 Raod.

Sanchai said the man tried to stop taxis to flee but none picked him up. Sanchai said he saw the man pulled out something from his bag and it fell on the ground and exploded.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Thani Thongphakdee said it could not be concluded now that the explosions were terrorist act and the explosions might not be related to terrorist warning by foreign embassies, which has already been lifted by 10 days.

Bomb suspect in custody

Immigration police chief Wibul Bangthamai confirmed that a man named Mohummad Hazaei, detained at Suvarnabhumi airport, is one of two suspects who fled the scene of the bomb blasts in Bangkok's Sukhumvit area on Tuesday.

According to Mr Wibul, the man refused to answer questions and demanded a translator. Police are now hunting for the third suspect who fled the scene after the first explosion according to witnesses.
Immigration police have been told to beef up security at all airports and checkpoints nationwide.

A man carrying an Iranian passport blew off his own legs and wounded four civilians in a series of three blasts on Tuesday afternoon in Sukhumvit Soi 71,

The explosions came a day after an Israeli diplomatic car was bombed in India.
Authorities say it is unclear whether the Bangkok explosions were linked to the New Delhi attack, but Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told AP, ``we can't rule out any possibility''.

A bungling Iranian bomber blew off his own legs when he hurled a grenade at Thai police outside a Bangkok school - which bounced off a tree and then exploded at his feet.

It came after he had blown up his own home and then hurled a grenade at a taxi driver who would not accept him as a passenger,

Police allegedly found an Iranian ID card in a satchel close to the blast in the Thai capital, and unconfirmed reports suggest he is called Saeid Moradi.

Four people, three men and one woman, were injured in the explosions which come the day after Israeli diplomats were targeted in simultaneous car bombings, also believed to have been carried out by Iran.
