Durian farmers in Phitsanulok, Thailand are introducing a new breed of durians to customers, many of whom have never even heard of its name. Called “In Love With Thailand”, over 150kgs of durians from the first batch are currently being sold to the public. According to one orchard owner, her farm has produced over 10 tonnes of durians this year.

Many of her customers have made reservations to purchase them. Currently, the Phitsanulok City Hall is also selling durians for Bt200 to Bt300 per kilogramme, which is the same price range as what customers would get from a farm.

This particular breed is said to be “crunchy” in texture and sweet in taste.

However, it’s smell is not as pungent as other durian breeds.

Rare breeds of durians are diminishing as many farmers are only planting those that are popular with consumers or exporters.
Hence, a government plant research centre in Chantaburi, Thailand is preserving and promoting these rare breeds of the King of Fruits to the Thai public through various initiatives.

The research centre recently organised a durian tasting event which ended on May 14.
It saw numerous durians with unusual names available for the public to sample.

According to the research centre’s director, Thailand has the highest number of durian breeds in the world, both in terms of variety and rarity.
The centre is working towards preserving and promoting these varieties by studying and growing new breeds through grafting and other horticultural techniques.

Among the new breeds “invented” include Chanthaburi 1, 2 and 3, all named after the province.
