The European Union has called for better protection for tourists visiting this resort island.
High transport costs, personal safety issues and jet ski scams are all high on the list of problems facing European visitors, David Lipman, the EU ambassador to Thailand, said.
The official on Friday led a European delegation in talks with Phuket Governor Maitree Inthusut.
Michelangelo Pipan, Italy's ambassadorto Thailand, suggested flags be putup to warn tourists against swimming and taking boat trips during the monsoon season.
Diplomats from 18 European countries said their citizens had also complained about the high price of public transport on the island.
Mr Maitree promised a range of improvements, including a plan to put an end to the jet ski scams. Operators for years have cheated tourists out of money by falsely accusing them of damaging the machines and then demanding large sums in compensation.
